South Park Tour – by South Park Arts and King County’s “In Motion” program

July 7th, 2011

let’s get out in force for a stroll or a bike ride around the neighborhood.

It’ll be the perfect excuse to enjoy a summer evening, chat up your neighbors and learn South Park fun facts (a brothel, river restoration, a speakeasy, farming, skating–all that’s in the mix.) Plus you’ll be able to visit the studios of local artists.

Grab a map for a self-led tour or meet up at the Neighborhood Center for a guided bike tour (6:30 or 7:30).

More updates to come, but plan on motivating yourself and others next Wednesday. For more ways to get In Motion, check out the King County program web page, and learn how to reduce single car trips.

“Thank You, South Park” community celebration was really quite awesome!

March 9th, 2011

On March 7th King County held a community celebration to thank the South Park Community for their help in securing vital funding for the replacement of the South Park Bridge. Community members gathered at the Aerospace Machinists 751 Union Hall for wide variety of delicious foods from South Park restaurants and entertainment from The Northwest Junior Pipe Band and The AFrican ConeXion Project.

The well-attended event featured an awards ceremony led by King County Executive Dow Constantine. Awards, made out of the grating from the old South Park Bridge, were handed out to over 25 community members who helped with efforts to secure bridge funding. King County Council member Joe McDermott, King County Department of Transportation Director Harold Taniguchi, and Interim Roads Services Director Paulette Norman were all on-hand to give out awards and thank community members for their great work in support of the new bridge. The event was a lot of fun and well executed by King County. South Park says “Thank you” back KC!

River City Skate Park Work Party, March 12th, 10am – 1pm

March 8th, 2011

Hey all!

Come on by to say hello and check out the progress this weekend – no skateboards required! The work party will be at the skate park on Saturday, March 12 from 10am-1pm. We have a little more work to do, cleaning up the site and mowing the lawn. Coffee and snacks will be available. Anyone under 15, have a parent join you!

We are really excited that the park is seeing new visitors and it has been almost completely transformed from the blackberry strewn site it was.

This summer we’re having a big community celebration and official opening at the park. So, please mark your calendars for June 19! We will post more details as they come.
